The word wench dates back to medieval times and was used to describe a young woman. In those times, when it was used in common speech it was probably used innocently and non-ironically, simply to mean a young woman. These days the term wench can be used in a derogatory sense or in a more jocular and light hearted way. Apart from their outfits, servers at the Oktoberfest are renowned for holding many large steins of beer in each hand. Some even wear wrist braces to help them hold the beers.

Another type of wench costume that fit’s into the period (although towards the end of the middle ages) is the pirate wench costume. The romantic view of pirates and adventure on the high seas fit’s in nicely with the buxom wench, either taking part in the adventures or serving the cold brews in the tavern.
