Swashbuckler what?

For all of you who are not familiar with pirate lingo, you may be scratching your head at the sound of this term.  Swashbuckler, usually linked to pirates, actually means ruffian, of bully.  The term swashbuckler comes from two words- swash- a noise made from striking, and buckler- a shield of some sort.

Unfortunately, swashbucklers were swordsmen who were not very well talented in this field, but swordsmen none the less.  Actually, to compensate for their lack of ability, they often made great noise by striking their shields with their swords, hence the term, and usually threatened anyone who crosses their path to a challenge.

However, thanks to pirate novels and Hollywood movies, these arrogant pricks were given a different definition and were deemed to be instant heroes.  So going from zero to hero, the modern meaning of that term is now a gallant and adventurous pirate who lives for thrill.

Swash Bucklin’ Scarlet Costume
