Renaissance Wench Costume
Get A Renaissance Wench Costume For Your Next Party or Halloween
This might seem like a contradiction in terms when you think of the Renaissance period as a time of intellectual development and a refinement in many cultural aspects of European civilization such as art, science and even clothing design. And the idea of a wench as a bawdy, slightly uncultured or unschooled woman. However the basic idea behind a Renaissance wench costume is to have the best of both and a bit of fun with each.
To begin with, Renaissance is a very broad term. The exact dates of which the movement lasted in Europe is thought to be around the 14 th century through to the 17th century. In short that’s a lot of time and a lot of different styles can be fit into that period.
Renaissance costumes tend to be go from Lady of the Manor through to common or garden peasant or wench outfit. The lady type costumes are generally fine quality garments that make a fantastic first impression and are extremely elaborate. If you are looking to make a great impression and really take the theme seriously then these are ideal costumes.
The outfits that drift more to the peasant/wench type costume are more for a bit of fun. They are generally looser and in keeping with the serving maid, milk maid or pirate/gypsy look. They may not be as immediately breath taking as the lady of the manor costumes but if you live up to the reputation of the adventure, game for anything spirit of the costumes you are sure to be the life of the party.
Ideas for the elegant lady of the manor type outfit could be taken from the Tudor or Elizabethan era.
Much of the style and fashion of these times has been immortalized by the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Some examples are dressing as Elizabeth I. Or even before Elizabeth as one of Henry VIII unfortunate wives. A fine example of this is the Anne Boleyn costume which is an elegant green and olive dress of supreme quality with lace up bodice and gold trimming. It comes replete with a matching headdress. Accessorize with some gaudy jewelry for a bit of fun or your favorite jewels for the elegant and beautiful look.
Other ideas might be a Baroness outfits which has just a hint of Gothic identity to it. Can you imagine yourself living in a Transylvanian castle for a night ? The the Baroness costume may be for you.
In terms of the going towards the wench side of things, you can get serving wench outfits or more adventurous costumes like a pirate or even a musketeer outfit. If you want a fiery night then a gypsy wench costume might be the best option. Whatever you decide, the Renaissance wench costume theme has many options to choose from.
