This might seem like a contradiction in terms when you think of the Renaissance period as a time of intellectual development and a refinement in many cultural aspects of European civilization such as art, science and even clothing design. And the idea of a wench as a bawdy, slightly uncultured  or unschooled woman. However the basic idea behind a Renaissance wench costume is to have the best of both and a bit of fun with each.

Or even before Elizabeth as one of Henry VIII unfortunate wives.
